888,461. Making hollow-ware stampings. THOMPSON (WOLVERHAMPTON) Ltd., JOHN. Feb. 14, 1958 [Nov. 14, 1956], No. 34883/56. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A method of forming an inflated hollow body from sheet metal comprises locating two sheet metal members having a curvature less than that required in the final inflated body in face to face relationship, effecting a fluid-tight seal around their peripheries, locating the members between two parts of a mould which envelopes the members, at least one part of the mould having an interior curvature corresponding to that of the final inflated body, and increasing the fluid pressure between the members to distort them into close contact with the mould. In an embodiment, two cicular steel sheets 1 and 2 are welded together around their peripheries as at 3. Each sheet comprises a plurality of panels 4 and may be laminated. The welded sheets are placed between mould parts 7 and 9 and the fluid pressure is introduced between the sheets through a pipe 6. In a modification, a hollow body 10 formed as disclosed in Specification 879,713 is located in the mould parts 7 and 9 and inflated to form a pressure vessel or cut to provide domed ends. The mould parts may have different interior contours and one may be flat.
