Abstract

728,966. Making frangible diaphragms. DISTILLERS CO., Ltd. June 10, 1953 [July 1, 1952], No, 16505/52. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). Stamping.-A process for the'manufacture of a dome-shaped frangible diaphragm for use in a safety device for pressure vessels comprises forming a sheet metal blank by fluid pressure in a mould to the shape which it would, take up when subjected to a positive pressure differential intermediate the normal pressure differential at which it is to be used and the pressure differential at which the diaphragm will rupture. The mould is made by reinforcing a formed diaphragm by casting metal or phenol-formaldehyde resin on its convex surface and then perforating the mould to allow the escape of air during a diaphragm forming operation. Alternatively, the original diaphragm is used as a pattern and does not form part of the mould. Vacuum supports for protecting the diaphragms from distortion and collapse under negative pressure differentials are formed from the same mould by leaving a formed diaphragm in the mould and then forming the vacuum support on top of it so that the convex surface of the support exactly fits the concave surface of the diaphragm. Alternatively, both diaphragm and support may be made simultaneously. The vacuum supports are pierced to allow the internal pressure in the pressure vessel to act on the frangible diaphragm. The supports and diaphragms may be made from nickel, silver, copper, stainless steel and other metal alloys. In a specific example a disc of.sheet silver is formed into a diaphragm using 170 lb. per square inch hydraulic pressure and a mould made by casting Woods' metal around its convex surface. The mould is pierced and a further disc of silver and a disc of nickel approximately three times as thick as the silver disc are placed on the mould, clamped in position and subjected to 1200 lb. per square inch hydraulic pressure. The formed discs are removed and the nickel disc perforated to form the vacuum support. Specification 711,516, [Group XXIX]; is referred to.
