650,747. Stamping; making sound reproducing &c. diaphragms. CESATI, M. Dec. 30, 1947, No. 34566. Convention date, Sept. 2, 1944. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Thin plates or strips for use as diaphragms or other vibrators for use in loud-speakers, microphones, &c. are shaped by means of directly applied fluid pressure; deformation being opposed and controlled by liquid on the other side,of the diaphragm, the escape of which can be regulated and measured. In one form the plate 1 to be shaped is clamped between other thin plates 4, 5 by rings 3, 6 and fluid pressure is applied at 8 and opposed by fluid controlled at 10. The shape of the container 9 may be that finally required for the diaphragm. In some cases the plates 4, 5 may be omitted. When the shape required is that of a segment of a sphere the container 9 need not conform to such shape. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes an arrangement in which the diaphragm is not confined on the side on which it is caused to bulge and the amount of displacement is controlled by the closing of an electric contact that may close a valve in the pressure supply line. Powder, wax or other means equivalent to a fluid may be employed. The plates 4, 5 may be of alloy consisting of 65-85 per cent of aluminium and the rest magnesium and the plates may be shaped to produce deformation of the diaphragm to increase the elasticity of the centre portion thereof. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
