Abstract
886,873. Making cupped articles. OLIN MATHIESON CHEMICAL CORPORATION. April 5, 1960 [April 24, 1959], No. 12018/60. Class 83 (2). [Also in Group XIII] A method of making a hollow article which has integral peripheral passages comprises forming a partially laminated sheet 1 by rolling together two metal sheets which have stop-weld material 2 between them in a predetermined pattern, forming a cup 20 from the sheet and then distending the passageways 21 by fluid pressure. The forming is performed mechanically using a conventional punch and die, or by hydraulic forming using the equipment shown in Fig. 7 which comprises a die 31 and a resilient diaphragm 47 which acts as a blank folder by bearing on the edges of the sheet 22 and also forms the sheet to the die when the pressure in chamber 46 is increased. The valves 34 and 39 are linked so that pressure is not built up in the upper chamber until a predetermined pressure has been reached in the lower chamber 32. As the sheet deforms fluid is exhausted from the chamber 32 through a relief valve 42. The joint face between the sections 29 and 43 of the apparatus is sealed by an 0-ring 44.
