Abstract
861,289. Pressure-relieving devices for fluids. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. June 4, 1958 [May 22, 1957], No. 16229/57. Class 135. A pressure-relieving device for a pressure vessel comprises a pair of spaced apart bursting discs 6 of, e.g. aluminium sheet, clamped one on each end of a stainless steel flanged member 1 by pressure rings 7. The device, connected at one end to the pressure vessel and at its other end open to the atmosphere, is provided between the discs with a lateral connection (not shown) to a vacuum pump. To prevent parting of the discs in processes where the pressure vessel is evacuated before each operation, the space between the discs is evacuated to a higher degree than the vessel to ensure that at all times the discs are deflected toward each other. When it is necessary that the two discs should rupture substantially simultaneously, the outer disc is made less strong to take account of the lesser pressure difference across the outer disc, i.e. between atmosphere and the pressure in the interspace after the rupture of the inner disc as compared with that across the inner disc.
