Abstract

735,751. Knitting. BENTLEY ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. Aug. 29, 1950 [Aug. 29, 1949], No. 22356/49. Class 74 (2). In courses I, III, &c., a mock-seam yarn is, in wales B10, C10, drawn, along with the main yarn, through loops of the preceding course, into ordinary loops, Fig. 5, or held loops, Fig. 4, and, in intervening courses II, IV, &c., is similarly drawn into loops in wales A10, D10 and floated across wales B10, C10. A cam 17 raises needles to a tucking track 14 and, during welt formation, a bolt cam 18 raises all needles to a knitting track 13 so that they clear and take and knit a main yarn only. Cam 18 is then made inoperative and needles are selected to tuck or knit by means of a pattern drum acting through selector fingers to rock any pattern jacks 19 which bear corresponding ones of a set of selecting butts so that the jacks miss a clearing cam 20 and their needles pass at tucking height, those jacks not rocked being raised by the cam 20 so that their needles clear. This raising is effected through bits of which those 21b under four needles at the back of the leg are longer than the others 21a and raise their needles into an uppermost track 12 so that, in addition to the main yarn, they take and knit also the mock seam yarn. By the use of suitable arrangements of selecting butts on the jacks 19, a plain knitted welt may be followed by a garter band pattern of tuck stitches, a leg having a mock seam and all-over tuck effects and the usual heel, plain foot bottom and toe. To prevent the mock seam yarn dropping on to the heads of the needles as it swings across the needle circle, a yarn tensioning device, such as a cymbal device, may be followed by a spring- loaded finger or dropper: as this yarn is carried into a trapped cutter, at the end of the mock seam, the tension device is opened so that, as the dropper swings up under the influence of its spring, it can pull yarn freely from the supply bobbin.
