[Class 74 (ii).] Uniformity of stitch at the two feeds of a machine for knitting split foot stockings &c. is obtained by tilting the sinkers as required. One sinker-tilting cam 38 carried by a rocker 28 and situated vertically above the stitch cam 22 at the instep feed operates on the butts 48 of sinkers 42 associated with long butt needles. Sinkers 40 associated with short butt needles have butts 44 which are engaged by the usual sinker cams and missed by the cam 38. Both kinds of sinkers can tilt on fulcra on the lower edges 41, 43. Sinker-tilting cams 58, 68, situated vertically above the stitch cams 24, 26 at the sole feed are carried on arms 56, 62 mounted on a shaft 54 and operated by a vertical arm 70, the lower end of which runs on a cam 78. During rotary knitting the needles take yarn from fingers 12 at the instep feed, the sole feed being out of action. Upon reciprocation, the cams 20, 22 are partially withdrawn to miss the short butt needles. The long butt needles are raised by deflector cams and miss the yarn at the sole feed. A few needles with butts of intermediate length knit at both feeds and form sutures. The size of loop is determined in a counterclockwise reciprocation by the cam 20 alone, and .in a clockwise reciprocation by the cam 22 and the sinker-tilting cam 38 acting together. To secure uniform loops in adjacent courses the rocker 28 is adjusted to compensate for the difference in level between the points of the cams 20, 22. The cam 20 is made permanently lower than the cam 22 and, since it receives more wear, further adjustment of the rocker 28 from time to time is necessary. The cams 24, 26 are approximately uniform and relative adjustment is obtained by varying the elevation of the cam 68. The cams 58, 68 are also adjustable relative to the other feed to allow for differences in weights of yarns used &c. The needle cylinder can also be adjusted relative to the cam cylinder.
