Abstract

735,448. Storing organic products. LINDEWALD, T. W. Sept. 24, 1952 [Sept. 24, 1951; Feb. 27, 1952; July 10, 1952], No. 23986/52. Class 49. In storing oxidizable organic products in chambers containing inert gas maintained at pressure greater than atmospheric, the gas is delivered from the chamber, is mixed with an oxidizable gaseous substance and conveyed over an oxidation catalyst for removal of oxygen present in the gas, and is returned to the storage chamber. The oxidizable substance is preferably of such composition that water is formed in the oxidation, and is exemplified by hydrogen or the vapour of pentane or ethanol. Water and other oxidation products may be removed from the gas by adsorption on activated carbon or alumina or by absorption in concentrated sulphuric acid. With the apparatus of Fig. 1, gas is driven by a fan 2 from a storage chamber 1 into a carburetter 4 for admixture with ethanol or pentane, the mixture is passed, in 7, over the oxidation catalyst, and then into a condenser 11 where water and unused ethanol or pentane are condensed, and the gas is returned by a pipe 13 to the chamber 1, the system being maintained constantly at pressure above atmospheric by means of a fan 9 to a branch pipe 8. With the apparatus of Fig. 2, gas from a storage chamber 14 is led through a non-return valve 27 into the lower part of a chimney-like vessel 16, therein past a wick 19 supplied with ethanol or pentane, over a heater 26 and through a layer 20 of oxidation catalyst, is led from the upper part of the vessel 16 to a condenser 22 and liquid separator 23, and is conveyed therefrom by a pipe 25 back to the chamber 14, pressure in the system being maintained by a fan 18, and the thermosiphon flow in the system induced by the heater 26, together with the rate of evaporation from the wick 19, being accelerated or retarded in accordance with the activity of the catalyst.
