Abstract
735,283. Valves. OWEN, H. April 9, 1951 [Dec. 8, 1950], No. 30084/50. Class 135. A balanced regulator valve for steam-driven locomotives, adapted to be disposed in the steam space of the boiler with the valve housing in open communication with the boiler dry pipe 2, comprises a hollow-open-ended, body member 23 with a lift valve 18 formed at its upper end and a piston-like closure 19 controlling ports 17 formed at its lower end. The ports 17 are provided in a liner 4 which is also provided with a further row of ports 16 communicating, on the one side, with a groove in the valve housing leading to the dry pipe, and, on the other side, with a groove 24 formed in the member 23. The latter member is carried by a spindle 13 which is actuated from the regulator lever in the locomotive cab and which is provided with a non-ferrous sleeve 35 where it passes through the guide boss 12 at the bottom of the liner 4. When the valve 18 is cracked open, only a small flow of steam to the dry pipe will be permitted at first owing to the throttling plug 27 which extends downwardly through the valve seating, the piston 19 still closing off the ports 17. On further movement of the regulator lever, closure 18 will be opened fully, and steam will be able to pass also through openings 10 in the liner, through the now-open ports 17, and into the pipe 2.
