Abstract

A reducing bath suitable for high-temperature vat dyeing comprises a vat dyestuff, an aqueous solution containing caustic alkali, e.g. sodium hydroxide, and a metal hydrosulphite, e.g. sodium or zinc hydrosulphite, at least one over-reduction stabilizer consisting of an inorganic nitrite, an inorganic halogenate or a nitrogen compound in which a nitrogen atom is attached by at least one covalent bond to oxygen and by at least one covalent bond to an element other than oxygen or nitrogen, and a compound or compounds inhibiting excessive hydrosulphite consumption consisting of ionizable magnesium compounds and/or ionizable manganese compounds and/or trialkanolamines. In examples specified nitrites are those of sodium and magnesium, a specified chlorate is sodium chlorate, specified nitrogen compounds are hydroxylamine hydrochloride and hydroxylammonium sulphate; specified magnesium compounds are the sulphate, chloride, nitrite and lignin sulphonate, specified manganese compounds are the chloride, sulphate, resinate and potassium permanganate, and specified trialkanolamines are triethanolamine and tripropanolamine.
