Abstract
734,347. Continuous casting-machines. BRENNAN, J. B. June 3, 1952 [July 14, 1951], No. 13955/52. Class 83 (1). A continuous casting machine comprises two endless chains 5 of die sections 6, Fig. 1, which are brought together into mating engagement between upper driving wheels 1, pass together through a cooled guide 8 and are then separated as they pass around lower idler wheels 2. As shown in Fig. 2, each die section may contain a number of casting cavities. For the casting of tubes, a mandrel 21 passes through the molten metal to beyond the zone of solidification and may assist the movement of the casting by being reciprocated or by having a fine screw thread on the end and being rotated. The end may also be tapered. In a modification, Fig. 7, the die cavity 51 is formed between endless members 52 sliding in guides 53. The apparatus may be disposed within a chamber which is evacuated or filled with an inert atmosphere.
