Abstract
Apparatus for producing sheet glass by the float process comprises a conventional float tank 5 of molten metal 9 on which the glass ribbon is formed, its edges being formed by contact with stationary barriers 33 (which may be cooled internally) and which are not wetted by the glass in a region where the viscosity of the glass is not less than 107.15 poises. The edges of the glass may additionally be cooled by cooling elements 45 stationed above the edges and which may be carried on the barriers. Downstream of the barriers there are stationed one or two thrust members 5 la and 51b either or both of which may be moved into contact with the edges of the glass to provide a thrust thereto which may be used to vary the thickness of the edges of the glass. As shown in Fig. 3, such a thrust member comprises a parallelopipedal block 62 supported on a movable frame 65 projecting through the wall of the float tank. Provision is made outside of the bath for varying the position of the block by known amounts and for rapidly raising it out of contact with the glass (see Figs 5-7, not shown). The shoe 62 may be formed of carbon.
