Abstract
1494192 Pressure die casting J V MURCOTT & SONS Ltd 25 Nov 1974 [25 Aug 1973] 32970/73 Heading B3F In pressure die casting, a carrier 44 is disposed to project into the mould cavity during pouring such that upon die separation the article produced 21 is supported on the carrier 44 and both may be moved away by a conveyer, e.g. an endless chain 37 from the dies 14, 12 to allow a second carrier to be moved between the dies and allow the process to be repeated. The apparatus disclosed comprises a fixed die 12, and a movable die 14 attached to a plate 15 which is slidable on horizontal bars 16. Each carrier 44 has two cylindrical rods and are mounted on the endless chain 37, which is supported by six chain wheels 35 and driven by a motor 36 mounted on a frame 28 slidable on the bars 16 relative to the movable die 14. In use, the movable die 14 is advanced by a pistoncylinder unit 22 to close the mould cavity. After casting the dies are separated and ejector pins 26 are advanced by a piston-cylinder unit 25. The frame 28 is also advanced at this stage by its piston-cylinder unit 39 such that the carrier 44 attached to the casting follows the movement of the casting 21. The chain 37 is driven to move the casting and its associated carrier from between the dies and to move a second of a plurality of further carriers to between the dies. A cooling head 27 is then lowered to spray water on to the movable die 14 before the dies are closed and the process repeated. A number of operations may be performed on the casting whilst it is suspended from the chain such as air spraying, drilling, tapping, painting, inspecting and marking. Finally the casting may be removed from its carrier 44 by an attachment 46 which comprises a resilient hammer (Fig. 6, not shown). Part of the carrier 44 may be left in the casting as an insert. In a modification (Fig. 7, not shown), the piston-cylinder unit 39 may be dispensed with and the frame 28 is directly coupled to the ejector pins 26.
