Abstract

632,104. Foundry plant. STANTON IRONWORKS CO., Ltd., and WILSON, P. H. Oct. 27, 1947, No. 28649. [Class 83 (i)] In a cyclic process for producing hollow bodies by centrifugal casting, a number of heated moulds are fed successively to a centrifugal casting-machine where the body is cast and the mould and body then pass to a station where the casting is ejected and the mould allowed to continue its path through a cooling zone and back to the casting-machine, the moulds remaining horizontal throughout the process and their translational movements being lateral relatively to' their axes. The passage of the moulds to and from the casting- machine is controlled by two inclined gravity conveyers 2, 3, Fig. 1, coupled at their ends by electrically-controlled hydraulic lifts 4, 5. In a modified form, Fig. 3, moulds from an upper horizontal conveyer section 19 are carried down a vertical section 20, along a lower horizontal section 22 within a cooling tunnel 23, up another vertical section 21 to another upper horizontal section 24 from which they are fed one at a time to a mould-charging apparatus c. This comprises horizontal links 14 with depressions for receiving two moulds 17, 18 mounted on rotating arms 10, 11. If, in the position shown in Fig. 3, a pipe has just been cast in the mould 18 and the mould 17 has just been fed on to the links 14 from the conveyer 24, then the arms 10, 11 are electrically operated so that the mould 18 is deposited on the conveyer 19 and the mould 17 is positioned ready for casting. As the arms 10, 11 complete a revolution, the left-hand depression comes to rest beneath the mould 17 and another mould is deposited in the right-hand depression from the conveyer 24, and the cycle is complete. The moulds with the castings therein are next fed to an extractor station at which a ram-head 26, Fig. 4, operated by a hydraulic cylinder 25, pushes the cast pipe out of the mould on to a supporting mandrel 28, which may be turned 90 degrees about an axis at right-angles to its own axis so as to deposit the casting on to another conveyer.
