Apparatus for forming refractory moulds on mould patterns comprises a runway 11, a plurality of pattern carrying units 12 positioned on the runway and powered for independent movement thereon, means on each unit for supporting a pattern so that it can be raised, lowered or rotated and control means, positioned remotely from the units for controlling the above movements independently for each pattern. The apparatus shown has two pattern carrying units 12 connected pivotally to post 13 and running on wheels 20, 21 on runway 11. They are driven through wheel 21 by an hydraulic motor from supply 25. The pattern 44 is mounted on spindle 41 which is rotatable by motor 48 and can be raised and lowered by double-acting piston 55 acting through a linkage comprising arms 53 and 54. The dip tank comprises a bath into which the pattern is lowered and in which the pattern is rotated. The bath may be changed for another of different capacity. At the dusting station the pattern is rotated in a stream of material which falls through a shoot into a lower container after having been raised by a bucket conveyer. The ammonia chamber station has a vertically sliding trap for closing the container after the pattern has entered and a hinged flap for closing the entry for the spindle extrusion 43. The two pattern carrying units are independently controlled from console 28 via hydraulic supply unit 26.
