Abstract

1,157,852. Casting billets; rolling; making ingots. E. Q. SYLVESTER. 24 Jan., 1967 [16 Feb., 1966], No. 3562/67. Headings B3A, B3F and B3M. A mould for casting steel slabs or billets comprises top and bottom graphite blocks 26, 28, front and rear end graphite blocks 32, 30, and graphite side blocks 22, 24 that are movable laterally towards and away from the other blocks. The mould cavity formed by the blocks includes a feeder head 38 and a bottom pouring ingate. The mould blocks are arranged in a casting plant so that the bottom and front and rear end blocks are supported on a car 78 movable on rails 82 so that a east slab can be removed from a casting location after separation of the side blocks 22, 24 and raising of the top block 28. The side blocks are mounted on roller supports running on a track formed in the beams of a casting plant building and the top block is suspended from hangers. After removal of a cast slab a unit is passed between the side blocks to spray wash them and coat them ready for another casting operation. Alternatively the washing and coating may be carried out by sprays suspended from overhead mountings and movable vertically and longitudinally of the side blocks. The casting plant may be laid out so that cars 78 carrying bottom and end blocks 26, 30, 32, are moved from opposite sides alternatively into a central pouring location where the side blocks 22, 24 and top blocks 28 are moved towards the bottom and end blocks to form a closed mould cavity and the mould is bottom poured from a ladle 92. The moulds are held at an angle of 3 degrees during pouring. The cast slab 44 is removed by overhead crane and lifting devices 100, 98 and lowered on to a car 108 having a plurality of supporting stands 110. The plant includes pre-heating furnaces holding furnaces and ladle transfer cars. In an alternative arrangement of plant layout (Figs. 11, 12, not shown) the cast slab 44 is lowered from between the side blocks and held between rams (156), (180) on upright members (150) and (152) while the bottom block 26 is removed. The slab 44 is then lowered on to a retractable base (194) in member (152) which is then pivoted to a horizontal position. The pivotable member (152) has driven rolls (208) for moving the slab 44 direct to rolling mills (210), (212) and an annealing furnace (216). The side blocks are moved past stations (218), (220) for cleaning and spray coating.
