Abstract

733,659. Hydraulic brakes. GIRLING, Ltd. March 12, 1954 [Jan. 19, 1953], No. 1459/53. Class 103 (1). A valve device for insertion in vehicle hydraulic braking systems, so as to limit the braking pressure on the rear wheels to prevent skidding when during deceleration the weight of the vehicle is transferred to the front wheels, comprises a main valve 17 and a pilot valve 22 which act to cut off communication between connections 11 to the master cylinder and connections 15 and 16 to the rear wheel brake cylinders when the biake cylinder pressure is sufficient to move a plunger 28 to the right against a pre-loading spring 28. Then if, due to brake drum expansion, a slight reduction in brake cylinder pressure takes place, the plunger 28 will move to open the pilot valve 22 only, to allow make up of pressure from the master cylinder to the full value, the area of the pilot valve effective to master cylinder pressure being small compared with the area of the plunger 25 effective to brake cylinder pressure. Fig. 4 shows an arrangement wherein a separate master cylinder supplying connections 11 and 50 pressurises the rear and front wheel cylinders through connections 43 and 82 and a ball valve 46 may be opened to by-pass the limiting valve 17, 22, if the brake cylinder pressure to the front wheels by connection 52 should fail.
