Abstract

972,139. Fluid-pressure brakes. GIRLING Ltd. Dec. 5, 1962 [Dec. 16, 1961], No. 45179/61. Heading F2F. In a braking system for rail vehicles the brakes are applied hydraulically by slave cylinders 18, 19 to which liquid under pressure is supplied from a master cylinder 12 actuated by a fluid-pressure actuator 10 of the vacuum-suspended diaphragm type and there is provided in the pipe-line between the master cylinder and the slave cylinder of the brakes on each axle of a vehicle a solenoid operated valve 16, 17 controlled by a skid detection device (not shown) which is sensitive to the rate of change of the rotational speed of the wheels. The valve 16 or 17 normally connects the appropriate slave cylinders 18 or 19, respectively to the master cylinder 12 but disconnects them from the master cylinder and connects them to a reservoir 13 via a return line 21 when the rate of change exceeds a predetermined value. An automatic hydraulic slack adjuster 15 may be provided in the pipe line 14 between the master cylinder and the slave cylinders. On operation of a control valve 16 or 17 by the skid detection device the slave cylinders 18 or 19 are put in communication with the reservoir 13 through a return line 21 containing a trap line pressure valve to maintain a pressure higher than the reservoir pressure on the exhaust side of the control valve 16 or 17.
