Abstract
732,703. Centrifugal separators. MERCO CENTRIFUGAL CO. Feb. 6, 1953 [Feb. 15, 1952], No. 3443/53. Class 23. A nozzle-type centrifuge is provided with injection conduits 93 . . . 97 whereby a vapour, such as steam, and a suitable agglomerant may be fed into the centrifuge to prevent the formation of froth therein. The housing 14 of the centrifuge is made from sections 20, 22, 24 and is provided with chambers 26, 28 for the light and heavy factions respectively. The rotor 10 is made from sections 30, 32, 34, 36 which are shaped as shown so as to define a separating chamber 44. The rotor has discs 46, vanes 70 and discharge nozzles 48 and is driven by a shaft 18 journalled in a resiliently mounted bearing. The material to be treated is fed to the chamber 44 through a channel 54, a chamber 60 and passages 72 ; the light and heavy factions being discharged through conduits 75, 53 respectively. Part of the heavy faction is recirculated to the rotor through a duct 82, a nozzle 78 and a passage 76; the remainder of the heavy faction being discharged through a valve-controlled duct 80. Washing liquid may be introduced into the channel 82 through a valve-controlled duct 86. Sealing elements are interposed between the mating edges of the housing sections 20, 22, 24 and a rotary sealing element 90, see Fig. 2 (not shown), is provided for the shaft. The centrifuge is suitable, inter alia, for the production of beet sugar by the lime process, the concentration of proteinaceous matter such as gluten and calcium phytate and in the production of aluminium products.
