Abstract

A coating composition for cathodes of electric discharge lamps consists of a suspension of an alkaline-earth compound, such as an alkaline-earth carbonate, in a cellulosic binder to which has been added a thermo-setting resin. The cellulose binder may be nitro-cellulose, ethyl cellulose or cellulose acetate, dissolved in amyl or butyl acetate; this binder decomposes completely at 200 DEG C., i.e. below the temperature reached during sealing-in of the cathode mount. The thermo-setting resin may be a condensation product of phenol and furfural with addition of hexamethylenetetramine; this cures to a solid plastic at 150-160 DEG C. but does not decompose below 450 DEG C. and is thus only driven off at the final activating temperature of 1200 DEG C. The amount of resin is small and in an example is 2-5 grams per 140 ml. of nitrocellulose solution to which 3-5 grams of powdered metallic zirconium may be added.
