Abstract

A spinneret for the extrusion of artificial filaments comprises a metal face over 1.5 mm. thick having spinning orifices each comprising a cylindrical portion extending inwards from the outer surface of the metal face and a coaxial truncated conical portion whose base is situated in the inner surface of the metal face, the length of the cylindrical portion being less than 5 per cent of the total thickness of the spinneret face and the truncated conical portion having an angle of 15-60 degrees between the sides. The cylindrical portion of each orifice may be joined directly to the truncated conical portion or may be joined thereto by means of a second coaxial truncated conical portion whose length is less than 15 per cent of the total thickness of the spinneret face, the total thickness of which may be 10 mm. or more. The spinneret face may be composed of stainless steel containing about 18 per cent chromium and 8 per cent nickel. Alternatively it may be composed of a steel containing chromium, possibly nickel, and in addition manganese, titanium, molybdenum, tungsten, vanadium or copper. In an example, 32 orifices spaced at regular intervals and arranged in a circle 30 mm. in diameter are pierced in a cup-shaped piece of rustless steel 2 mm. thick containing 18 per cent chromium and 8 per cent nickel. Each orifice consists of a cylindrical portion extending inwards from the spinneret face and having a diameter of 0.08 mm. and a length of 0.06 mm., and the cylindrical portion communicates directly with a coaxial truncated cone inlet portion which includes an angle of 35 degrees between its sides.
