In a spinnerette assembly comprising a spinning block having a central inlet communicating with a chamber inside the block, a spinnerette plate defining a surface of the chamber, and a clamp plate securing the spinnerette plate to the block, a distributer is provided within the chamber for directing a spinning composition from the central inlet to the periphery of the spinnerette plate, so that the composition flows over the spinnerette plate from its periphery towards its centre. The chamber inside the spinning block may contain a spinnerette adapter. In one embodiment (Fig. 3), a spinnerette assembly comprises heated block 28 having internal cylindrical chamber 29 for receiving spinning adapter 30, spinnerette plate 38 and clamp plate 41. Aligned inlets 31, 32 lead into a conical hollow 51 in adapter 30, which forms, with distributer 34, an annular, progressively narrowing channel of constant cross-sectional area. In operation, molten polymer from inlets 31, 32 passes through this channel, and through orifices 35 distributed around the periphery of the flanged, conical distributer 34, to shallow chamber 36 overlying filter screen 37. The polymer, which is then extruded through orifices 39 in spinnerette plate 38, thus moves from the periphery of the spinnerette plate towards its centre, with consequent decrease in hold-up time and resultant polymer degradation. In examples, filaments are melt-spun from poly(1,4-cyclohexylene - dimethylene) terephthalate and polyethylene terephthalate.
