Abstract

1,055,756. Spinnerets. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. July 12, 1965 [July 13, 1964], No. 29456/65. Heading B5B. In a spinneret assembly comprising a filter block, spinneret plate and means for attaching the assembly to a spinning machine, the filter block has two separate filter cavities and two symmetrical polymer distribution channels each connected to a filter cavity by a series of tunnels, each distribution channel defining a path extending in opposite directions, from its connected filter cavity, towards the periphery of the filter block, circling towards the interior of the block, and terminating in opposed straight end portions having a tapered depth which is a minimum at the extreme ends. The straight end portions of both distribution channels are parallel to each other and to a row of orifices in the spinning plate to which they are connected. The assembly may be used for spinning conjugate or homogeneous filaments. The assembly 10 (Fig. 1, not shown) comprises a top plate 12, filter block 14 and spinneret plate 16 held in position against a spinning machine (not shown) by ring 200. When spinning conjugate filaments, polymer A enters port 26 and flows via filter cavity 28 and series of tunnels 30, 32, 34, 36, 38 to distribution channel 40. Polymer B enters port 42, and reaches distribution channel 56 via filter cavity 44. Channel 56 defines a path in the filter block which extends towards the periphery of the block, circles round at 58, 60 and terminates in straight portions 62, 64 (Fig. 22. not shown). Channel 40 defines a similar path ending in straight portions 66, 68. The width of channels 40, 56 is constant but the depth decreases in straight portions 62, 64, 66, 68, being a minimum at the extreme ends. Polymer A is then forced through capillary 70, and mingles in orifice 74 with polymer B, which is forced through capillary 72. A series of orifices is located in line with orifice 74. If quenching air flows from direction 75, the filaments are uniformly quenched. The capillaries 70, 72 and orifices 74 are formed in removable insert 76. When homogeneous filaments are required, insert 76 is replaced by one in which the capillaries, e.g. 70, lead directly to the orifices, e.g. 74. so that each filament is formed completely from one polymer supply. Insert 76 may be modified to produce sheath-core filaments (Specification 1,017,639).- A plurality of pins, 78, 80 inserted in holding ring 20, engage groove 82 located in spinneret plate 16 (Fig. 3, not shown) and the assembly attached by engaging the holding ring into threads on the spinning machine. Ramp 86 and cut-out 84 on the spinneret plate enable rapid removal and replacement of the spinneret assembly.
