Abstract
1,011,644. Melt-spinning polycaproamide filaments. ALLIED CHEMICAL CORPORATION. March 4, 1964 [March 4, 1963], No. 9186/64. Heading B5B. An apparatus for melt-spinning epsilonpolycaproamide filaments comprises a vertical cylindrical spinning chamber or shaft 1 (Fig. 1) closed at the top by a horizontal spinneret 2 having a multiplicity of spinning orifices 3. Aspiration means comprise an annular exhaust chamber or exhaust manifold 4 surrounding the upper end of the spinning chamber and provided with one or more exhaust ports leading to a vacuum pump. The chamber 4 communicates with the chamber 1 through a horizontal ring of holes 5 which are screened by a baffle 6. A point E in the lower edge of the baffle 6 is preferably so positioned with respect to the nearest hole C of the ring of holes 5 and with respect to a point P in the axis of the chamber 1 and at the same level as the holes 5 that the angle CEP is 90 to 170 degrees. Cooling gas enters the spinning chamber 1 through the horizontal rings of holes 9 the upper row of which, designated I is at such a level that the angle IPO is 45 to 120 degrees, O designating the spinneret orifice (of the outermost ring of orifices) directly above I. Contact sealing means 10 close below the annular chamber 4 comprise an annular lip 14 accommodated in an annular horizontal groove 11 containing a non- volatile inert liquid 15. Alternatively the groove may contain a gasket of the O-ring type consisting of soft or resilient material. The major portion of the cooling gas entering the chamber 1 through the inlet holes 9 descends towards the bottom of the chamber and is discharged through the outlet 12. The minor portion of the cooling gas flow is drawn up the chamber and carries with it through the holes 5 volatilized monomer given off by the molten freshly extruded fiilaments.
