Abstract
1343512 Melt spinning apparatus BELOIT CORP 16 Sept 1971 [24 Sept 1970] 43282/71 Heading B5B Apparatus for producing a multifilament strand 3 comprises a plurality of downwardlydirected extrusion orifices 2 and disposed vertically below and spaced from the orifices a heat exchanger 4 comprising a tube 5 having at its lower end 12 an opening 7 through which the multifilament strand passes to conventional wind-up means 16 and 17 and a first baffle 9 forming an annular chamber 10 surrounding the extruded filaments and blower 8 for introducing cooling gas to the lower end of the heat exchanger 4 via chamber 10 so that the gas stream does not contact the filaments for a distance A but flows upwards in an annular flow pattern and at its upper end 6 a second baffle 11 comprising a cylindrical portion 13 and a diverging conical portion 14 which diverts the countercurrently-flowing gas stream in an annular flow pattern away from the extruded filament strand for a distance C, the multifilaments being cooled by contact with the countercurrent gas in the heat exchanger over a distance B. As shown the cooling gas may be ambient air which may be further cooled by passage through heat exchanger 17 and preferably filtered by one or more conventional filter screens 18 in conduit 19 or screen 20 in annular chamber 10. The melt-extrusion of polypropylene filaments is exemplified.
