Abstract
1,239,727. Aerating liquids. VOGELBUSCH G.m.b.H. 23 April, 1970 [24 April, 1969], No. 19581/76. Heading B1C. Liquid is aerated by letting it flow from a high level 3 to a low level 4 through a siphon 9 and admitting gas to a part of the siphon which is at sub-atmospheric pressure. The gas flow is varied by a valve 18 controlled either by the liquid velocity as detected at 19' or by the gas pressure as detected in the chamber 16; since the gas reduces the density of the mixture in the downward leg of the siphon, the valve 18 can be thus controlled to keep the liquid velocity constant. The control 20 also senses the pressure at 19 and closes a valve 13 leading to an exhauster 12 which establishes the siphon, and opens the valve 18 when siphonage starts. The gas inlets 15 may be in tubes projecting into the siphon. The gas flow may be controlled by selective control of the opening of a number of gas inlets at different heights, for example by a sleeve sliding over the openings. Alternatively the siphon may be raised and lowered to vary the height of the openings. There may be triangular-reaction rods 24 projecting across the siphon to reduce the size of the gas bubbles. In another embodibent (Figs. 2 and 3, not shown) the crosssection of the downward leg is increased to increase the dwell time of the gas bubbles in the liquid. The siphon may be located at a weir on a river, with the outlet formed as a horizontal slit. A number of siphons may be arranged side-by-side across the river (Fig. 3, not shown).
