Abstract

1392408 Producing filaments CELANESE CORP 19 March 1973 [24 March 1972] 13146/73 Heading B5B [Also in Division D1] An apparatus for producing organic thermoplastic filamentary material comprises an extrusion orifice 14 from which a filament 16 extends and a plurality of nozzles 18 which produce planar gas streams 17 converging on the nozzle axis 19 at between 5 and 45 degrees. The streams are arranged to intersect at a point 21 displaced from the axis 19 by a distance 13, not less than the diameter of the extrudate stream at that point. The gas stream orifices 18 are rectangular. The apparatus may be used to produce a non-woven self-bonded structure by directing the filamentary material toward a rotating mandrel which also reciprocates. Examples are given and the results tabulated to illustrate the effect of varying the geometry of the apparatus and also the extrusion temperature. Particulate matter 34 may be dropped on the structure from a hopper 32.
