Abstract
731,575. Spray carburetters. DAIMLER BENZ AKT.-GES. June 22, 1953 [June 20, 1952], No. 17307/53. Class 7(3). In a start-assisting device 11 e.g. a starting carburetter, which is automatically put out of operation after starting of the engine by a device 17 responsive to engine temperature, the control exerted by the thermally responsive device is modified by a timed means 20 set in operation by the starting of the engine and adapted to perform its operation in a given time, the members 17, 20, being operatively connected in parallel to the control member 13 of the device 11 so that when the engine is cold at starting the amount of fuel is first reduced by the timed means 20 independently of the temperature-responsive device 17 and thereafter by the temperature responsive device 17 independently of the device 20. As shown, the starting carburetter 11 is attached to a main carburetter 10 and the control lever 12 of the starting carburetter is connected to the midpoint of a lever 15 connected at one end to the thermostat 17 and at the other to the device 20 comprising a spring-loaded piston 21 on which the lubricating oil pressure acts through a pipe 24 containing a choking orifice 23. At cold starting the lever 15 is held against the stops 28, 30, whereby the device 11 is set to supply a rich starting mixture. When the engine is started, the oil pressure slowly forces the piston 21 to the left so that after a predetermined time the lever 15 assumes an intermediate position 151 in which the richness of the mixture is reduced. Finally the thermally responsive device 17, which may be subjected to the temperature of the cooling water, moves the lower end of the lever 15 to the left so that it assumes the position 1511 in which the device 11 is rendered inoperative. The device 17 is arranged so that when fully operative it tends to move the lever 15 beyond the cut-off position, so that when the engine is stopped and the upper end of the lever 15 is moved back against the stop 28, the lower end of the lever is moved against a stop 31 so that the lever 15 assumes the position 15<SP>111</SP> which prevents a rich mixture being supplied if the engine is restarted whilst hot. The timed device 20 may be a timepiece or electrical time relay and in the embodiment shown the piston 21 may be actuated by cooling water pressure instead of lubricating oil, in which case the devices 17, 20, may be combined to form a unit.
