Abstract
529,671. Regulating fuel pumps. ALBION MOTORS, Ltd., and STEAD, E. B. June 6, 1939. No. 16554. [Class 102 (i)] [Also in Group XXVII] For facilitating the starting of fuel-injection engines by causing the fuel pumps to deliver an excess quantity of fuel at starting, a thermally sensitive device responsive to the temperature at a part of the engine is arranged to control the range of travel of a component of a train connecting the engine speed governor with an output-regulating member of the pumps. In one form, Fig. 1, the governor 2 is connected by a link 5 and lever 4 to a slide bar 6 controlling the pump output, the travel of which is limited by a stop 7 carried by a thermally sensitive bellows 8, and hot air from the vicinity of the exhaust pipe is circulated through a jacket 10 around the bellows. In modifications : (a) the stop is connected by a flexible wire to a bimetallic coil on the exhaust pipe ; (b) the stop is formed by the free end of a lever connected to a thermally sensitive rod mounted on the exhaust pipe &c. ; (c) the stop is formed by the core of a solenoid in circuit with an engine-starter or other switch and with a thermally-sensitive switch mounted on the exhaust pipe, so that the circuit is broken when the engine is running.
