Abstract

277,526. Whatmough, W. A., and. Fisher, W. L. Nov. 12, 1926. Thermostats.-The temperature of the air supplied to a carburettor is maintained substantially constant by controlling supplies of heated and cold air by valves actuated by a temperature-sensitive device located in the path of and completely surrounded by the whole of the air mixturel or of the fuel and air mixture. A conduit 1 is connected at the end 2 to a hot air supply, e.g. a casing around the exhaust pipe, whilst the end 4 is in direct communication with the atmosphere and admits cold air. The hot and cold air are controlled by valves 13, 16 connected through link work 14, 12, 11, 10, 9 with the temperaturesensitive device consisting of a metal bellows 7 containing a volatile liquid and mounted in a chamber 5 so as to be completely surrounded by the stream of mixed hot and cold air. The bellows may be replaced by a bi-metallic strip. The temperature may be adjusted by a screw, spring or other device which may be interconnected with the throttle.-actuating means.
