Abstract

326,876. Whatmough, W. A., and Fisher, W. L. Dec. 22, 1928. Thermostats.-The temperature of the air supplied to a carburettor is maintained substantially constant by controlling supplies of heated and cold air by a valve or valves actuated by a Bourdon tube which communicates with a closed vessel containing a fluid which is disposed in the path of the air mixture or of the fuel and air mixture. Hot and cold air inlets 2, 3 are controlled by hit-and-miss valves 5, 6 carried by a cranked spindle 7. A Bourdon tube 10 is attached at one end by a bifurcated member 11 to the crank 7 and at the other communicates with a vessel 12, preferably of stream line form, containing mercury or a volatile liquid and situated either in the conduit 13 leading to the carburettor or in the mixture outlet of the carburettor. The conduit 13 may be heat insulated, The Bourdon tube is mounted in the chamber 1 by a strap 14 carried by a member 15 secured at its outer end to the wall of the chamber 1, a screw 16 passing through the end of the member 16 and engaging a nut 17. By adjusting the screw 16, the point at which the valves 5, 6 operate may be varied. In a modification, the Bourdon tube operates a butterfly valve in each air inlet through a lever and cranks on the valve spindles.
