SHERMAN WIGHT, OF BBUOKLYN, NEW YORK.
VAEORIZER. 7
Application filed September 18,-1919. Serial No. 324,399.
To all w/wm it vim concern: 7
, .Be -.it known that I, JARvrs' SHERMAN View, a citizen of the United States, and in the county of Kings resident of Brooklyn,
and-State of'New York, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Vaporizers, of which the ollowing is a specification. I
The invention relates to a vaporizer for r combustion engines.
The object of the invention is to enable i the roper proportion of water to. be supplie to the engine with the charge through the-inlet manifold,to prevent deposition of w carbonyby incomplete combustion, and to 1 is a body having a top and bottom cap 2, 3. A float 4 is within the body 1 and is attached to a valve stem 5 which, passes through bottom cap 3. Secured centrally to the bottom of cap 3 is a boss 6 containing a chamber 7 and a water inlet 8. A, valve 9 on stem 5 operates in chamber 7 and has a seat 10 formed in the bottom cap 3 within the chamber 7.. Boss 6 is adapted to be screwed into the exhaust ipe 11 or otherwise mounted so as to be eated. Leading to the water inlet from the engine water jacket 13 or 'other source of supply is pipe 12. Pipe 23- is an air intake pipe to t body 1 either from atmosphereporpref erably from the crank case, because this air is hot and also carries a considerable amount 01" combustible vapor. Leading from the body 1 are two pipes 14' and 15' which converge into mixing pipe 16 which in turn leads to inlet manifold 17. Pipe 14; has a valve 18 to control the quantity of steam or water vapor passing therethrough and pipe 15 likewise has a valve 19 to control the gpuantity alves 18 and 19 have set screws 20 and 21 as maintain the Pr p r j s m Of the connected thereto,
of water passing therethroughj valves, when made, against vibrationand accidental movement. Valve 9 has a pilot 25 integral therewith to provide for a prop er seating of the valve in the case of move ment from the perpendicular, of the float,
which occurs-when the vaporizer is -app'lied to automobiles and when they are in oper ation;
The exhaust gases heat the water in cham her 7 which flows past valve '9 into body 1. Float 4 and valve 9 maintain the water formation of water Va or or steam-under atmospheric fpressure. quantity 0 water'vapor or dry steam while valve 19 controls'the amount of water flow ing into the mixing assage 16. The qualat a constant level. I Air inlet 23 permits the alve 18 controls the ity of thesteam is t erefore controlled by valve 19. It has been found in practice that vapor alone'with air is not fully-satisfactory, because the air cannot carry enough, but by supplying additional water, which can be entrained and carried along'by the air and vapor, extremely satisfactory results are secured. For removingfaccumulations, additional water is supplied while the engine i's-raced.
Various changes and modifications might be made in the details and arrangements of this invention and still be -within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed, is:
1. The combination with a vaporizer having a vapor chamber, of a supply passageway for an internal combustion engine connected therewith, air and water intakes to said chamber, and separate water and vapor outlets from the chamber to the supply passageway.
2. The combination with a vaporizer having a vapor chamber, of a mixing passage for an internal combustion engine air and water intakes to said chamber, means for maintaining the water in the chamber at a constant level, an outlet from the chamber above the water level and one from below the water level, the said outlets communicating with the mixing passage.
3. In a vaporizer having a vapor chamber, air and water intakes to said chamber,
a float in said chamber for controlling the water intake and maintaining the water level in said chamber substantially constant, a supp y passage y to an internal combustion engine and means for controlling the amount of liquid so supplied. a
4. In a vaporizer, a tank having a main chamber and a communicating auxiliary heating and valve chamber, an air inlet to the main chamber, a water inlet to the auxiliary chamber, a float controlled valve between the main chamber and the auxiliarychamber to maintain the water in the main chamber at a constant level, an outlet'above thewater line and one below it from the main chamber communicating with a mixing passage.
5. A vaporizer comprising in combination a chamber, a water inlet for the chamber, an air inlet in said chamber, an outlet from the chamber above the normal level of the water therein, a similar outlet below the water level, a regulating valve in said second mentioned outlet, and means beyond said valve for-connecting said outlets. a
6. A vaporizer comprising in combination afloat chamber, a-water inlet valve in said float chamber, a float in said chamber controlling said valve, 3. source of water supply connected with said valve, an air inlet to said chamber, an outlet. from the chamber above the normal level of the water therein, a similar outlet below said water level, regulating valves in said outing a float chamber,
particles of liquid Water with the 8. A charge moistening device comprisa Water inlet valve in said float chamber, a float in said float chamber controlling said valve, means for heating the water to cause it to give off vapor in said float chamber,
vapor to produce a mixture having greater water content than said vapor alone, means for controlling the quantity of liquid Water means for entraining particles of liquid water with the.
so entrained, and means for delivering the mixture to an engine.
9. In a vaporizer, the combination with a chamber provided with means for supplying air'and waterthereto, an air outlet in the upper portion of the chamber, and a water outlet .in the lower portion thereof, means for connecting said outlets and for controlling the proportions of air and" water in the resultant mixture. I
