Abstract

731,293. Grinding propellers. BULL'S METAL & MARINE, Ltd. Oct. 20, 1953 [Oct. 23, 1952], No. 26609/52. Class 60. A series of grooves to serve as a guide to a finishing operation is cut in a ship's propeller having blades which vary in pitch from root to tip by a machine comprising means for holding the propeller 1 in position and a grinding-head 17, Fig. 1, slidably mounted on a guide 12 which is capable of rotation about and movement parallel to the axis of the propeller, the outer end of the guide being itself guided on an inclined rail 24 adjustable to the required pitch angle. The propeller is centred by dogs or pinching screws on a table 2 which is normally held by friction but may be easily turned when the oil pressure in its bearing 5 is increased by a hand pump 7. A counterbalanced bracket 10 slidably and rotatably mounted on a central steel post 8 supports the guide 12 at an angle which may be adjusted by means of a screwed section 13a on a tie-rod 13. In operation, the guide 12 is set to the rake angle (if any) of the blades and a radial groove cut from root to tip of each blade by traversing the head 17 along the guide 12 with a feed-screw 15. A series of circumferential grooves at radial intervals of 3 to 6 inches is then cut by rotating the guide 12 about the post 8, each groove being cut at the required pitch angle by adjustment of calibrated supports 25, Fig. 3, for the rail 24. The guide engages this rail through a roller mounted on a telescopic section 12a which is adjusted simultaneously with the screwed section 13a. An electrically-driven thin grinding-wheel, preferably of the resin-bonded type, is used.
