Abstract

729,365. Ships windows. BULL'S METAL & MARINE, Ltd. Feb. 26, 1954 [March 11, 1953], No. 6733/53. Class 20 (3). A ship's window comprises a glass pane 1, Fig. 2, slidably guided in a vertical plane in a frame, auxiliary closures such as a mosquito screen 18 and blackout shutter 19 likewise guided in the frame on the inboard side of the pane 1, and operating means for the pane comprising racks disposed substantially in the plane of the pane below the lateral edges thereof and engaged by pinions 24 on a shaft 25 driven by a removable handle 26 through a worm and worm wheel in a totally enclosed grease-tight gearbox 27, the shaft 25 being located on the inboard side of the plane of movement of the auxiliary closures 18, 19 so as to be clear of them. The frameless glass pane 1 is located at each lateral edge between an L-shaped retaining bar 2, Fig. 4, and a bar 3 secured thereto by tongue 2<SP>1</SP> and groove, and screws 4. The bars 2 have pins 7 engaging inclined slots 8 in upward extensions 5 of the operating racks, the racks and their extensions being guided in channel-shaped side members 10, the outboard flanges 11 of which are screwed at 13 to the ship's structure 12. The pane 1 is supported from the racks by relatively heavy gauge springs enclosed in telescopic casings. On operating the handle 26 the pane 1, retaining bars 2 and racks are lifted until the pane 1 is stopped in the fully raised position. Continued raising of the racks and their extensions 5, permitted by compression of the springs, causesthe pins 7 to move along the slots 8 and thus press the pane 1 outwardly against a sealing strip 15 mounted on the frame. The strip 15 has a rectangular portion 16 housed in an undercut groove 17 and a sealing portion of triangular section. The closures 18, 19 are guided in channels 20, 21 in inboard attachments 22 screwed at 23 to the frame members 10 and may be supported in their channels by slide-lock means. In a modification the gearbox 27 is disposed between the pinions 24.
