Abstract

1,174,915. Screening apparatus. LONGWOOD ENG. CO. Ltd. 1 Dec., 1967 [1 Sept., 1966], No. 39069/66. Heading BID. A screen 1, which covers an overflow opening 4 leading from a foul water duct for discharging storm water therefrom, comprises vertical bars 2 and is cleaned by a reciprocating rake 11, 14, which engages its tines between the bars on its downstroke but is withdrawn therefrom on the upstroke. This movement is achieved by counter-weighted pivoted ramps 8, which swing to and fro in widened lower parts 7 of guide channels 6 and are engaged by rollers 13 on the rake frame 11. Vertical reciprocating movement is applied to the rake by an electric motor, which is stopped automatically if resistance to rake movement rises too high, an alarm bell or light then indicating that the motor has stopped. Two screens and rakes may be arranged in parallel, side by side across a wide opening, the rakes being driven by one motor and arranged to operate in antiphase to assist balancing. Upper and lower ramps 8 could be used in apparatus with a long rake stroke. The rake may be cleaned by engaging a fixed scraper.
