A rotary switch or interrupter comprises a base 1 having a shaft 13 journaled therein, a plurality of contact-operating wipers 14 ... 18. being arranged axially along' the shaft on one side of the base. Fixed to the base 1 around the circumference of a circle 2, such as at points 38, 39 &c., are a plurality of pillars 8 each carrying a number of contact sets such as 3 ... 7, one contact set on each pillar, say 7, forming a contact level, the arrangement being such that as the shaft 13 and thus the contact-operating wipers 14 ... 18 are rotated, the contacts 3 ... 7 on each of the pillars 8 are operated in a cyclic sequence. The angular positions of the wipers 14 ... 18 relatively to each other and relatively to the base 1 can be adjusted by means of screwed rods 24, 35, 29, 36, thus the instant of operation of the contacts and the periods between the operation thereof are variable. The switch is primarily designed for use with electrostatic precipitators disclosed in Specification 684,024 [Group XL (a)].
