Abstract
728,823. Valve guides. HILLS, F. M. May 8, 1953 [Feb. 29, 1952], No. 5416/52. Class 7(2). [Also in Groups XXVI and XXIX] Leakage along the stem of a valve in an internalcombustion engine is prevented by a washer 1 of felt neoprene, asbestos, &c., which seats on the head of the valve guide 6 and is retained in position by an element 7 provided with two arms 8, the latter being bent down to engage the valve guide or, as shown, the valve spring s. A further spring may be wound round the arms 8. A cylinder 18 of felt surrounding the valve guide may be separate from, or integral with, the washer and the arms 8 contact the coils of the valve spring s in order to damp the movements of the latter. Lateral extensions which can be bent round to grip the guide 6 may be provided on the ends of the arms 8.
