Abstract

711,108. Valves; cylinders. DAIMLERBENZ AKT.-GES. July 18, 1952 [July 18, 1951], No. 18263/52. Classes 7(2) and 7(6) A ring 17, Fig. 3, preferably of metal, situated at the outer end of a valve guide 10 and of an axial thickness smaller than the diameter of the valve stem is a close fit against the valve stem and prevents excess oil leaking down the stem. The upper face of the ring may be flat or conical, and the ring may merely rest on the top of the valve guide or be held thereon e.g. by a spring 20, Fig. 3. In a modification, Fig. 4, the ring is held in position by a circular clip 21 engaging a groove 23 in the guide, which clip may be formed with slots extending downwards part of its length. Alternatively, the clip may have a flanged end which acts as an abutment for the main valve spring. In Fig. 7 the ring 17 is held in position by a rubber sleeve 28 held in a groove 23 by a spring ring 29. The upper end of the sleeve may engage over the ring as shown or may be clipped into a groove in the side of the ring 17, or the sleeve may be vulcanized on to the guide 10 or ring 17. In a further modification the ring 17 is held by the upper turns of a helical spring enclosed in a groove in the guide 10. The valve guide or the valve stem may be chromium plated to reduce wear.
