Abstract

727,617. Centrifugal fans. SOC. D'ETUDES DE MACHINES THIRMIQUES. July 11, 1951 [July 19, 1950], No. 2757/53. Divided out of 16452/51. Classes 110 (1). An exhaust gas turbine-driven supercharger for an internal-combustion engine has a blower body comprising at least one volute casing with a flared outlet pipe and grid means at the end of said pipe. The grid means may be a bank of cooler tubes. The turbine driven supercharger shown, Fig. 1, comprises a vertical shaft 1 journalled in bearings 2, 3. The shaft 1 carries two blower wheels 4, 5 to which air is supplied through a port 6 which acts as a silencer. The blower body comprises two volutes 8, Fig. 2, which are flared to a considerable extent, leading to two members 10 which direct the air to the inlet end of the second blower wheel 5. The members 10 are fitted with a grid of rods 11 which is is stated prevent the break-away of the fluid flow from the walls of the flared portion of the volute. The grid may be formed by a bank of cooler tubes.
