Abstract
713,537. Gas turbine plant. SOC. D'ETUDES DE MACHINES THERMIQUES. July 11, 1951 [July 19, 1950], No. 16453/51. Class 110(3) [Also in Group XXVII] A turbine-driven supercharger for an internal combustion engine comprising, two or more compression stages and a driving shaft which is supported by two bearings arranged at its opposite ends has the first compression stage arranged adjacent to the blower side bearing and the last compression stage close to the turbine and the shaft is larger in diameter at its centre than at its ends. The shaft 1 supporting the turbine 8 and blower wheels 13, 16 is supported at its ends by bearings 2, 3. Air is sucked into wheel 13 through the inlet 11 and discharged through a diffuser 14 and guide vanes 15 to the wheel 16. The wheel 16 discharges through, a diffuser 17, a manifold 18 and a tangential outlet conduit. The exhaust gases from the engine pass into a chamber 6 feeding the turbine nozzles 7. The hub bore of the wheel 16 is greater than that of the wheel 13 so that the diameter of the shaft is larger at 20 than at 21. The blading of the wheels 13, 16 may be bent backwards and the width of the air passage arranged so that the cross-sectional area of flow is substantially constant. A heat-insulating layer or wall may be disposed between the blower casing 18 and the turbine casing 9.
