Abstract

567,156. Turbo-blowers. WANS, O., and RUSTON & HORNSBY, Ltd. June 22, 1943, No. 10027. [Classes 110 (i) and 110 (iii)] The turbo-blower is fixed by a flange 3 to an internal-combustion engine which supplies exhaust gas to a divided turbine inlet 18, 19 to drive a rotor 10. The rotor 10 and impeller 22 on the shaft 9, and the casing parts 8; 24, 28 and 46 constitute one unit and may be withdrawn from the casing 1 for dismantling and servicing. A bearing 32, for the turbine, is surrounded by a water jacket 30 connected to a further jacket 41 which is joined to the water jacket of the engine. Air from the impeller is forced down a duct 37 to a labyrinth packing 36 to prevent gases from the turbine from passing to the bearing 32. Air entering the impeller casing is guided by a silencer plate 54, which may be lined with filtering material, to pass axially through a tunnel-like structure 45. The outer edges of parts 23, 24, 28 are machined to form a sliding fit inside the casing 1. The volute chamber 26 leads to the engine manifold. Lubricating oil for the bearings enters through a plug 59 leading to ducts within the shaft 9.
