727,553. Supply and switching systems for X-ray tubes; transformer systems. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Oct. 13, 1953 [Oct. 21, 1952], No. 28118/53. Class 38 (4). In a supply system for an X-ray tube 17, requiring a wide range of operating voltages, comprising a high-tension transformer 20 supplied from mains 51, 52 over a multi-tapped autotransformer 50 and a pair of back-to-back switching ignitrons 95, 96, the range of voltages over which the ignitrons must be capable of operating is reduced by the provision of two primary windings 21, 22, on the transformer 20 and of a series/parallel contactor 42 for these windings whereby the step-up ratio of the transformer may be varied. The contactor is controlled by a switch 90, operated by a cam 86 which is moved with the coarse voltagetapping switch 84 of the autotransformer, the arrangement being such that as switch 84 is moved progressively from position 11 to position 1 to effect successive increases in tube voltage, at some intermediate position switch 90 closes to change the initial series connection of windings 21, 22 into a parallel connection. A different fine-tapping switch 80, or. 82, is effective for the two ratios of the transformer 20.
