Abstract

A method for coagulating an unsaturated organic compound-sulphur dioxide resin latex comprises intimately admixing it with a finely divided, solid, unsaturated organic compound-sulphur dioxide resin in the wet or dry state at a temperature not in excess of 65 DEG C., following which the coagulated resin composition may be diluted with water and heated to 75 DEG C. to increase the particle size. The latices may be prepared from unsaturated organic compounds such as butenes, pentenes, octenes, 4-cyclohexylbutene-1, cyclohexene, acetylenes, allyl alcohol, vinyl acetate, allyl ethyl ether, o-allylanisole, o - allylphenol, p - bromoallylbenzene, methyl undecylenate, undecylenyl alcohol, undecylenic acid and acrylonitrile. The coagulating resin may be substantially identical with the resin of the latex and may amount to 5 to 20 per cent of the latex, the higher proportions being used at lower temperatures. Known coagulating agents such as acetic acid, potassium acetate and magnesium sulphate may be used in conjunction with the dry, finely divided resin and the process may be carried out continuously, a portion of the resin produced being recycled to the coagulation zone to effect coagulation. In example IV the resin latex is produced by heteropolymerization of sulphur dioxide and a 1-butene/acrylonitrile blend using ammonium nitrate as catalyst and sodium lauryl sulphate as dispersing agent. Moulding the dried products results in clear specimens. Specifications 686,446 and 695,117 are referred to.
