Abstract
727,422. Cycle saddles and seats. SANDERS, R. J. May 20, 1953 [May 22, 1952], No. 12929/52. Class 136(1). In a pillion seat for attachment to a motor cycle saddle, having an under frame provided with attachment means projecting from the forward end thereof, the attachment means are constructed for attachment to the underframe of the saddle so as to secure the pillion seat to the saddle with the forward edge of the pillion seat in contact with the rear edge of the saddle and the upper surface of the pillion seat on the same level as the upper surface of the saddle. The under frame of the pillion comprises side members 18, a front member 19 and a rear member 20. As shown in Fig. 2, a pair of spaced sub frame members 22 are connected to the rear member 20 and to a pair of brackets 23 secured to the front member 19. The sub frame members are connected to the under frame of the saddle by means of plates 24 secured to the rear frame member 12 of the saddle by a U-shaped stirrup 25. The forward end of each member 22 is secured to a lug 16 on the nose portion 15 of the saddle. In the alternative construction shown in Figure 3 a hinged joint is formed between the pillion and the saddle. A pair of spaced lugs 26 are secured to the member 19 of the pillion seat and a plate 28 is pivoted at 27 to the lugs 26. The plate 28 is connected to the rear frame member 12 of the saddle by means of a U-shaped stirrup 29. The hinged joint may include a rubber sleeve or it may be replaced by a universal or ball joint.
