Abstract

727,261. Extensible paper. CLUETT, PEABODY & CO., Inc. May 5, 1953 [June 11, 1952], No. 14707/52. Class 96. Moist paper P from a Fourdrinier machine, or dried paper which has been re-moistened is passed between a rubber belt 15 and a heated drum 13, at a position where the surface of the belt has been extended due to a convex configuration as it passes over a guide roll 10, and is about to be compressed due to a concave configuration as it passes about the roll 13; the paper P being thus compressed transversely and also longitudinally so that it slips over the smooth surface of the drum 13 and the fibres of the paper are crowded into voids therein so that, after drying, the paper is extensible like crepe paper, but has a smooth non-crepe surface. The paper may be subjected to a series of such compressions before final drying, as by a heated drum and a felt. Before treatment the paper should be partly dried slowly as by high-frequency or infra red heating so as to leave voids into which the fibres can be crushed. The paper, which is of increased flexibility, may be used for, or in, twine, or for wrapping cables, the innermost part of the overlapping windings conforming closely to the bare conductor due to the enhanced extensibility. The paper may be creped to give still further extensibility.
