A stepped grate comprises alternate stationary bars 4 and cylindrical rotatable toothed bars 5. The bars are hollow and are water-cooled and the bars 5 may be rotated by a common driving means which also drives an undergrate blower. Clinker is crushed between the bars 4 and 5 before falling into an ashpit 7.
