A common controller for two motors or two sets of motors comprises a drum 1 fixed to a shaft having a control handle, and a drum 2 mounted loosely on the shaft and resiliently coupled to the drum 1 by a spring which is biased to set the drums in given relative positions. Movement of the control handle about a transverse pin actuates contacts 12, 13, to alternative positions. For simultaneous control of the motors, a push button 25 occupies the position I and the control handle is lowered to close contacts 16, 17, so that the controller brushes 18, 18<SP>1</SP> are energized and the two drums moved together. Sequential control of the motors is obtained by depressing the pushbutton to the position 11 and raising the control handle to open contacts 16, 17, and close contacts 14, 15. The brush 18 is thus disconnected but the brush 18' is kept energized through contacts 37, 43, before contacts 40, 41, open, the coil of relay 32 being energized so that a solenoid 26 closes a lock 27 to prevent rotation of the drum 2. The control handle is now turned to a desired angular position and is lowered .to re-connect the contacts 16, 17, and to de-energize the relay 32 which opens contact 33 after a predetermined period to release the lock and allow the drum 2 to follow the movement of the drum 1.
