[Class 38 (iii)] With auxiliary switches.- A control system for an alternating - current commutator motor speed regulated by displacement of its brushes, comprises a controller 1, Fig. 1, having contacts adapted to establish the main motor circuit, and switches 15, 16 adapted to control the movement of the brushes, the switches 15, 16, being operated by the same controller handle after the main motor circuit has been established, and without moving the main contacts. The controller handle may move in a gate 21, Fig. 4, which permits vertical movement to actuate the switches 15, 16, only after the main contacts have been moved to either of the operative positions by transverse movement. In its vertical movement the controller handle may act on switch actuating bolts which are spring biassed to return the handle to its upper position. In the upper position of the handle the switches are closed which cause movement of the brushes to the low speed position. The switch actuating bolts may have notches co-operating with spring pressed fingers so that the three operating positions of the switches are definitely located. The switches 15, 16, control, by means of reversing contactors 11, 12, a pilot motor 10, Fig. 1, which operates the brush moving gear, limit switches 13, 14 being operated at the minimum and full speed positions of the brushes. A switch 9, closed only when the brushes are at or near their slow speed position, prevents energization of the main motor unless the brush gear is at or near the minimum speed position. The main motor may be controlled directly from the controller 1 or through interlocked reversing contactors 2, 3, and the main supply to the controller may include a contactor controlled. by the switch 9, or, alternatively, the switch. 9 may control an electrically -operated clutch operating as described in Specification 445,694.
