Abstract

514,540. Control of A.C. motors BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., PETCH, T. H., and LIDDIARD, H. W. C. May 9, 1938, No. 13836. [Class 38 (iii)] Non-regenerative braking.-Dynamic braking of an induction motor is produced when the control lever is moved first to "off" position and then in either direction from 'that positon with the motor still running. As shown the coils of the main forward and reverse contactors, 1 and 2 are interlocked mutually and with 3, the coil of the contactor connecting one of the windings of the induction motor to a D.C. supply, to give dynamic braking, by the interlocking contacts 1a, 2a, 1b, 2b and 3a. 1c and 2c are open when their respective contactors are open and 3b is open when the main dynamic braking contacts are open. Contacts 4, 5, 6 and 7 are situated on a master controller operated by the driver's control lever. 4 and 5 supply current to the contactor coils 1 and 2 respectively while 6 and 7 are for the operation and interlocking of 3. To produce dynamic braking, the push button 8 is closed and the controller removed from either the forward or reverse position to the " off " position. Either 1 or 2 is de-energized and either 1b or 2b will close, completing a circuit through 3, 8 and 7. This closes the dynamic braking contacter and any further movement of the controller in any direction maintains this circuit through 6 and 3b, which closed when 3 was energized. The correct amount of resistance is kept in the rotor circuit automatically by the change in position of the controller and if the dynamic braking contactor opens for any reason neither the forward or reversing contactors can close by reason of an interlock. The dynamic braking may also be introduced either by a centrifugal device depending on the speed of the motor or by a device whose action depends on the direction of operation of the controller. A further circuit may be added to limit the motor speed when the load is being taken off. Specification 512,237 is referred to.
