Abstract

798,654. Control of D.C. motors. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Jan. 29, 1957 [Feb. 2, 1956], No. 3338/56. Class 38 (3). The armature 1 of a D.C. motor having a field winding 6 is supplied through a mercury arc rectifier 2. Movement of a master controller MC into its forward range establishes a circuit for relay FDC whereby contactor F is closed to energize the field winding 6 in the appropriate direction. The rectifier is rendered conducting by the movement of contact finger 16, so as to apply a low voltage to the motor. As the motor commences to rotate a motordriven directional switch DS closes contacts FDSI to complete a hold-in circuit for the relay FDC. The motor torque and speed may then be controlled by adjustment of the position of the master controller. To obtain braking, the master controller is returned through its " off " position into the reverse range of movement. The output of the rectifier is initially reduced to zero, and, when the controller reaches the reverse position, a relay RC is energized to insert resistor 5 in the motor armature circuit. At the same time, the contactor F is opened and the motor field winding is de-energized. The relay RC also closes contacts to complete a circuit for the reverse contactor R whereby the motor is excited in the reverse direction. The braking torque is then increased by further movement of the controller away from the " off " position. Similar operation is obtained when the motor is started in reverse. In a modification, the field winding 6 is excited by an amplidyne having a control winding which is energized through normally-closed contacts of the relay RC, Fig. 2 (not shown). The master controller includes a further rheostat providing an alternative circuit for the exciter control winding when the relay RC is energized. This alternative circuit is open in the " off " position of the controller, but is closed and the resistance progressively reduced when the controller is moved away from the neutral position. The relay RC is also provided with normally-open contacts for short-circuiting the rheostat 11 to afford maximum rectifier output. In place of grid control of the rectifier, tap-changing means may be provided, or saturable reactors may be used for regulating the alternating voltage applied to the rectifier. The motor may drive a mine winder, and manual actuation of the master controller may be replaced by automatic control of the closed-loop type.
